Rabelais was one of France’s bawdiest authors, his satire filled with both discreet and overt dirty jokes, hardly what one would expect to elicit music from Massenet, the master of exotic sensuality and romantic obsession. Nonetheless, in 1910, Massenet saw a play by Edouard Adenis based on Rabelais‘ Gargantua et Pantagruel, and when Adenis refused permission for Massenet to commission a libretto based on his work, the impresario Henri Heugel asked George Spitzmuller and Maurice Boukay to draw a libretto directly from the source material. The resulting work bears little resemblance to the original, but better-suited for Massenet‘s style. (One might say the same about many other Massenet librettos, such as Thais, Werther, and Don Quichotte.)
However, the work was not a great success at its 1913 premiere, shortly after Massenet‘s death. While part of this was due to the audience’s expectations of something more ribald and rowdy, a good deal of it lies in the work itself. While it contains many lovely lyrical passages, Columbine’s music has the sparkle of his earlier Dulcinee, and some of the romantic passages show a typically Massenet yearning and melancholy, it rarely rises to the dramatic, emotional, or musical heights of his earlier works.
