These women successfully “catfished” ISIS recruitment services into sending them ,300 by claiming that they would spend the money to travel to Syria and join the Islamic State.
Chechen police have detained three women who conned Islamic State (Isis) after posing as supporters of the jihadist group and persuading militants to send them money to travel to Syria.
These three young women from the Caucasus pulled a fast one on jihadis fishing for mail-order brides. Once the cash was transferred, however, the girls shut down all their accounts and left the recruiters hanging. After this successful deceit, the women went on to trick several other recruiters into sending them “travel expense” money. They had scammed the utopia-promising jihadi scammers: After the wire transfers came through, the Chechens would block the jihadi they’d been communicating with and disappear-then they’d repeat the process.
Hundreds of Chechen women are believed to have travelled to join IS, with many lured over social media with promises of homes and marriage.
According to RT News, the ISIS members allegedly reached out to the girls’ social media accounts, asking them to join the militant cause. It’s unclear how long they managed the scheme, but the trio reportedly made around $3,300.
The woman who spoke to Life News said she initially seriously considered taking up the offer to move to Syria, but backed out because of the experiences of others.
The Islamic State often targets Muslim communities like Chechnya’s to recruit people who are willing to inflict individual acts of terrorism on their own soil. Chechen police officer Valery Zolotaryov spoke to a local paper, and warned against trying to recreate the stunt: “I don’t advise anyone to communicate with unsafe criminals, especially for grabbing quick money”.
