Riassunto della trama
Il principe Orazio può essere viziato e, brama l’attenzione dal padre, si comporta male frequentemente; come un principe, nessuno può alzare una mano contro di lui. Pertanto, la sua famiglia lo offre con un capro espiatorio , Jemmy, un ragazzo orfano che sarà punito al posto del principe. Anche se ha imparato a leggere, scrivere e matematica mentre viveva nel castello, Jemmy è battuto più volte al giorno e desidera la libertà che aveva per le strade. Quando il principe decide di scappare per un capriccio esige che Jemmy agire come suo servo durante il suo viaggio. Mentre in fuga, i ragazzi vengono prelevati da due briganti famosi, Hold-Your-Naso Billy e Cutwater, che schiudono un piano per riscattare il principe. Jemmy li parla a credere che egli è il principe, e mette in moto un piano di fuga. Il principe fraintende le intenzioni di Jemmy e lo tradisce. Anche così, i ragazzi scappano. Si imbattono in una ragazza che cerca il suo orso ballerino perduta e li dirige al fiume dove trovano un uomo gentile, con un carro pieno di patate. I ragazzi aiutano l’uomo ottenere il suo carro dal fango, e in cambio l’uomo patata dà i ragazzi, la ragazza, e l’orso un ascensore per la fiera, ma sono ben presto intercettati dai banditi. Ancora credendo Jemmy è il principe, e credendo che fosse un crimine peggiore di un omicidio a battere il principe, hanno battuto invece Orazio.
L’orso ballerino spaventa i banditi via, e tutti arriva in fiera. La ragazza guadagna un paio di monete con il suo orso, l’uomo patata bolle le patate e le vende e ragazzi a testa in giù per la fogna di catturare alcuni topi. Sulla loro strada, sentono qualcuno parlare del principe mancante. Una donna fa un’osservazione su come le cose molto peggiori saranno quando il principe diventa re. I sentimenti del principe sono feriti molto profondamente, ma non mostra le sue emozioni. Quando i ragazzi imparano che il re ha pubblicato una ricompensa per il capro espiatorio, vanno nelle fogne dove si vedono i banditi. Essi ingannano i banditi nella fogna più pericolosa, dove i topi li attaccano, il principe decide che vuole andare finalmente a casa. Quando ritornano all’uomo patata, Orazio si rivela come un principe e suggerisce che l’uomo patata raccogliere la ricompensa per il capro espiatorio. Quando il principe spiega tutta la scappatella al re, Jemmy è perdonato, ed i due ragazzi vivono nel palazzo, come il migliore degli amici. I banditi alla fine scappano nelle fogne, ma fanno l’errore di riporre su una nave detenuto voce di un’isola prigione.

Adattamenti
Il libro di Fleischman è stato adattato nel 1994 film televisivo principe Brat e la Whipping Boy, interpretato da George C. Scott e diretto da Sydney Macartney . Sid Fleischman ha scritto il copione e il film ha vinto il CableACE Award di quell’anno.

Jemmy is the prince’s whipping boy. Because the prince is never supposed to be disciplined in the kingdom, any time the prince gets in trouble, Jemmy is brought in and whipped in place of the prince. This is a difficult job, especially since the prince has earned the name Prince Brat, and he longs to escape the castle and return to the streets where he was raised. One night, Prince Brat arrives at Jemmy’s room and orders the whipping boy to accompany him as he runs away. Jemmy sees this as his chance to escape the castle, and they leave.
Prince Brat and Jemmy, however, immediately run into two highwaymen, Hold-Your-Nose Billy and Cutwater, once they leave the castle. The bandits kidnap the boys hoping to collect a ransom for the prince. Jemmy, however, sees a chance to save the prince. He convinces the bandits that he is the prince, and he tries to get them to send his servant (really the prince) back with a message. The prince, though, refuses to pretend that he is a lowly servant and foils the plan. In frustration, Jemmy makes a break into the woods and momentarily escapes the bandits. Prince Brat, of course, follows Jemmy. The bandits chase the boys through the forest until a bear appears to chase the highwaymen away. The bear, it turns out, has been trained by a gypsy, and they are headed to the fair. The boys join the gypsy and enter the city.
Once there, however, the bandits catch up to the boys. They flee into the sewers where Jemmy once was a rat-catcher. The highwaymen pursue them through the tunnels. By a bit of trickery, Jemmy convinces the bandits to head down a tunnel filled with rats, and once the bandits are attacked by the rats, they flee the city. Jimmy’s experience in the tunnel makes him recognize that he really doesn’t want to return to his former life on the streets. Also, the two boys determine that they have become friends throughout their adventure. They emerge from the sewers to find that the king is searching for the prince and is offering a reward for the whipping boy who supposedly kidnapped the prince. The prince tells Jemmy that he will protect him, and in an act of friendship and trust, Jemmy decides to return to the castle, not as the prince’s whipping boy, but as his friend.
