The Ministers in Alexis Tsipras

After his party’s major victory in the 2015 general elections SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras has begun devising plans for his ministerial cabinet. At present it appears that Mr. Tsipras will form a coalition government with Panos Kammenos‘ Independent Greeks. The two have arranged to meet at 10:30am on Monday to further discuss the particulars.

Nevertheless, rumors have begun circulating regarding a potential cabinet that Mr. Tsipras may have in mind. Yannis Dragasakis is expected to play a prominent role in Mr. Tsipras’ government and is tipped to assume the position of government Vice President and general coordinator of financial affairs. The Ministry of Finances may be helmed by Yannis Varoufakis, with Euclid Tsakalotos as the alternate Minister in charge of revenue. Mr. Varoufakis may however be placed elsewhere.

The Ministry of Growth is rumored to merge with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Networks, in which case Giorgos Stathakis will be appointed Minister, with Gabriel Sakellaridis expected to assume a role. The Ministry of Interior is also rumored to merge with the Ministry of Administrative Reform, where Dimitris Papadimoulis a strong contender for the top position. An MP from PASOK, possibly Alekos Mitropoulos, may also appointed there.

Theodoros Dritsas is the most likely candidate for the Ministry of National Defense, where retired general Nikolaos Toskas will be appointed as his Alternate Minister. Should SYRIZA form an alliance with the Independent Greeks though, Panos Kammenos has hinted that he will claim this particular Ministry.

The creation of a new Ministry of Migration has been rumored, with Tasia Christodoulopoulou considered to be placed in charged. At the same time the Ministry of the Press will be abolished, with Panagiotis Skourletis being the likeliest candidate for the position of government spokesman.  Alexis Tsipras’ trusted consultant Nikos Pappas is probably going to be appointed in a prominent position possibly as Minister of State, as is Avgi journalist Thanasis Krateros.

Nikos Kotzias is also one of the likeliest candidates for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while Dimitris Tsoukalas is one of the favorites for the Ministry of Culture. Dimitris Stratoulis seems to be one of the more likely SYRIZA MPs to take over the Ministry of Labor, while Petros Kourouplis has been suggested for the Ministry of Health.

Zoi Konstantopoulou may be appointed at the Ministry of Justice, although Panagiotis Nikoloudis, the current chief of the Authority for Combating Money Laundering has also been considered and is believed to have discussed the matter. Nikos Voutsis is also expected to assume a central role in the new government, possibly as President of Parliament.

Furthermore, Mr. Theodorakis underline the importance of major alliances and the need for a “patriotic action plan”. He also stated that he is prepared to discuss the parameters of his support in such plans. Mr. Theodorakis is rumored to meet with SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras over the next two days to discuss the possibility of an alliance.

Mr. Theodorakis also stressed that Golden Dawn’s increased presence for a second consecutive election was a “bad sign” and stressed that the real causes of such a phenomenon must be sought out.

Editorial: “The historic opportunity and great responsibility”

Monday, January 26, 201

As of today Greece is turning a page. A great majority f the people decide to give a left-wing party a historic opportunity. SYRIZA and Mr. Tsipras are assuming a great responsibility to manage the future of country during a critical period. They now have the opportunity to prove that they can implement their pre-election promises, to create a new relationship with Europe. The next day, obviously, will not be easy. There are many open fronts and the expectations are high.

By casting their vote, the Greek people denounced the parties that have so far managed the crisis. After PASOK, New Democracy suffered a major defeat. The two major parties which have run the country for the past decades have shrunk dramatically, as the people largely blamed them for the country’s current state. It is the first time that a part from the left is called upon to assume leadership of the country. To prove in practice that it can distribute the burden of the crisis in a fairer way; to establish a new relationship between the citizen and the state, without any political or clientelist dependencies and above all, to negotiate better terms in our relationship with our creditors.

The next day though must be different to what we experienced in the election campaign period. The polarizing conflict, the division, the fear must give way to hope, like SYRIZA promised, as well as a rudimentary national consensus. Because recent experience has proven that no party, no mater how much of a majority it may have and no matter how powerful it may be on its own, can tackle the problems that plague the country on its own.

The government that SYRIZA will form has a historic opportunity and great responsibility. The people gave him a mandate and not a blank check, like Mr. Tsipras himself admitted. The hope of the overwhelming majority of the Greek peoples, which accompanies this mandate, is that he keeps his promises, so that the uncertainty can finally end, so that the country can turn to the future and finally overcome the sins of the past.
