The Comedy of Philosophy brings modern debates in continental philosophy to bear on the historical study of early cinematic comedy. Through the films of Mack Sennett, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, and the Marx Brothers, Lisa Trahair investigates early cinema’s exploration of sense and nonsense by utilizing the contributions to the philosophy of comedy made by Freud and Bataille and by examining significant poststructuralist interpretations of their work. Trahair explores the shift from the excessive physical slapstick of the Mack Sennett era to the so-called structural comedy of the 1920s, and also offers a new perspective on the importance of psychoanalysis for the study of film by focusing on the implications of Freud’s theory of the unconscious for our understanding of visuality.

Comici spaventati filosofi

In un breve saggio recentemente pubblicato nel volume collettaneo a cura di Leonardo Gandini Il cinema americano attraverso i film (Carocci, 2011) la critica cinematografica australiana Lisa Trahair compie un’operazione, discutibile quanto si voglia, ma che ha l’indubbio pregio dell’originalità. La Trahair analizza il cinema di Buster Keaton e in particolare il suo Come vinsi la guerra (The General, 1926) alla luce della filosofia stoica (quella storicamente fiorita ad Atene intorno al 300 a.C., con filosofi quali Zenone di Cizio, Cleante e Crisippo), sostenendo che, fino ad oggi, «le tracce di stoicismo nei film di Keaton non sono state analizzate a sufficienza» e proponendosi «di analizzare come The General concepisca il mondo da una prospettiva stoica».
Effettivamente, ai tempi degli studi liceali di filosofia, certe massime attribuite ad alcuni filosofi per sintetizzarne rozzamente il pensiero su determinati campi della loro speculazione («Conosci te stesso»; «Tutto scorre»; «Il non essere non è»; «Cogito ergo sum» e così via) hanno sempre stimolato nei miei compagni di classe e in me il senso del comico.
Ovviamente, il senso del discorso di Lisa Trahair è un altro ed anche lo spirito di questa playlist. Senza entrare troppo nel merito, dunque (ed eventualmente rimandando chi fosse interessato alla lettura del saggio della Trahair), mi sembra che ve ne sia a sufficienza per azzardare ulteriori, inevitabilmente superficiali (il mio livello in questo campo è meno che scolastico), parallelismi, tra comici e filosofie classiche. Personalmente, la butto là, disponibile a correzioni ed integrazioni.
