LKP, Guadeloupe’s collective of political, cultural, and labor organizations, which produced the social movement that had paralyzed the island for 44 days in early 2009, recently launched a new call for general strike. For the first time since the creation of the Lyiannaj kont pwofitasyon (LKP), the event traditionally held on the morning of the first day of the strike was postponed to 4:00pm, as the potential strikers were invited to “mobilize in their workplaces.” Early Thursday morning [last week] police were positioned at several points of strategic roads in Pointe-à-Pitre, including the entrances to Jarry, the industrial-commercial zone, where most jobs in Guadeloupe are concentrated. Ahead of the event, the staff of fifteen of the 108 service stations on the island adhered to work stoppages the day before the proposed strike, creating panic among motorists.
Spokesman and leader of the LKP, Elie Domota, indicated on several radio stations that “workers were called to form picket lines in their companies” and to “assemble” in Pointe-a-Pitre.
The LKP calls for the immediate application of the convertibility clause of the Bino agreement, which ended the social crisis in 2009 requesting a payment of a 200-euro premium by island companies by March 2012.
